All I can say is THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
Rest assured, I shall never forget.
Veterans Day
Perfect Storm?
Here are some scary points to ponder.
US National Debt – $9 Trillion and counting
US Trade Deficit – $596 Billion and counting
Crude Oil Prices – Approaching $100 per Barrel
Gasoline Prices – Over $3 per gallon
Sub Prime Housing Market Meltdown – $900 Billion in suspect debt.
Total US revolving consumer debt (credit cards) – $915 Billion and climbing.
Total US Consumer Debt (excluding mortgage) – $2.46 Trillion and climbing.
Volatile stock market and increase in global terrorism.
Call me paranoid, but this has the makings of a perfect storm that could make the great depression look like a Sunday picnic. The only question remaining is what will be the final straw that breaks the camels back?
Divide and Conquer
I hate it when I’m right. Last year, when Novell sold out and signed a deal with the devil, I predicted that Microsoft would next go after Red Hat.
Here was my exact quote.
Microsoft is like any predator. They will separate the herd and then then go after the lone gazelle. Divide and conquer. Till yesterday the Linux vendors were united. The obvious intent is now to separate Red Hat from the herd and go after them.
And 9 months later, here it is.
People who use Red Hat, at least with respect to our intellectual property, in a sense have an obligation to compensate us, Ballmer said last week at a company event in London discussing online services in the UK.
More of the same FUD. No disclosure of what patents Red Hat is supposedly violating, but hey, you must pay us because we say so. Didn’t we just go through this crap with SCO?
I truly HATE this company and all that it stands for. They have no redeeming feature whatsoever.
Never Forget
It is our duty and our solemn obligation.
Never Forget.
iTunes Wifi
Apple announced the new iPodtouch today along with the iTunes Wifi Music Store which allows one to directly download a song on to the iPod.
Zune users can keep their “Squirting”. This is the real implementation of Wifi.
What intrigues me now is the logical step of ordering Movies directly on Apple TV from the iTunes store. I don’t see why not.
New iMacs
They even have the (soon to be leaving) head honcho of Microsoft Security yearning for one. They look pretty sharp to me, but some people don’t seem to like the black bezel.
The disappointing part of the announcements yesterday for me was that the new iMovie ’08 is not supported on G4 Macs. I guess I have finally reached the obsolescence point. It is actually a credit to Macs that I have not felt the need to upgrade for years. All good things must come to an end I guess. This coupled with the fact that my trusty ol’ G3 iBook (Snowwhite) recently bit the dust due to the now infamous logic board issue, tells me I am now officially behind the times. 🙂
Note to apple: Releasing an update titled iPhoto 7.0.1 for the newly released iPhoto ’08 is one sure way to cause confusion. Didn’t anyone at Apple see the apparent number conflict here?
Divide and Conquer
I am glad for people like him that call a spade “a spade”.
Here’s a choice quote regarding Microsoft’s so called 236 patents that Linux supposedly violates.
That’s extortion and we should call it what it is,” he said. “To say, as [Microsoft CEO Steve] Ballmer did, that there is undisclosed balance sheet liability, that’s just extortion and we should refuse to get drawn into that game. On the other side, if Microsoft is concerned about its intellectual property, there is no one in the free software community that wants to violate any one’s IP. Disclose the patents and we’ll fix the code. Alternatively, move on.
Becoming an American
The process was long – it took me close to 18 years, but the final steps (civics/English tests, interviews etc.) were nowhere as arduous as the media makes them out to be. If I can’t answer 6 out of 10 questions from a previously given set of 100 questions, and read and write one simple sentence of English, then I don’t deserve to be a Citizen. Period. I am sure a bunch of people will disagree with me on that score, but the INS has even provisions for the elderly and for those who can’t read/write/speak English fluently, so the argument is pretty weak. Throughout this process, the much maligned INS has been the most professional and easy to work with government organization I have had to deal with. I don’t know if this was a case of me being just lucky or the fact that you always hear the one horror story on the news compared to the thousands of success stories.
And yes, the illegal immigration debate does hit close to home for someone like me. Say what you want about economic refugees, but walking across the border and being given “legal” status does make a mockery of all the waiting I had to do to become a Citizen.
God Bless the United States of America, and “Thank You” to the Greatest country in the world. I look forward to being a responsible and productive citizen of this great nation.
Macs in the Enterprise
As always, ALL bullies are cowards, and when Frantz refused to buckle and took the matter to his lawyers, Microsoft backed off.
The great part of this story is that as Frantz said, he is NOT doing this out of vengeance.
Instead, AWC’s new strategic enterprise technology plan is the direct result of proof-of-concept testing that indicates that the company can cut costs, increase system reliability and security, and provide expanded IT support services by porting a major portion of its IT infrastructure to Apple. Extricating itself from its exclusive dependence on Microsoft is simply the cherry on top.
Whoops! there goes the “Macs are expensive toys” tagline. Time for another Microsoft sponsored “Study” on TCO. As an added plus, the iPhone turned out to be the ideal vehicle for “live production data” and
After his little backyard experiment, Frantz has another plan in the works: order iPhones for the 50 or so traveling managers and give them anywhere/anytime access to VIPS data via Internet access furnished under an enterprise contract with AT&T; Inc.
Kudos to Dale Frantz for not succumbing to the “We have to buy Microsoft” because everyone else does mentality.
iPhone FUD
Now the MS Exchange team has weighed in with their own iFUD piece disguised as an article on IMAP and it’s so called lack of security features. This one is almost “Enderlesque”. Someone needs to educate these morons on what a messaging protocol (which is ALL that IMAP is) is supposed to do or not do. And also explain to them the difference between a Mail Transfer protocol and a Mail Client!
Here’s an example.
The IMAP protocol only supports email
Wow! And my Apple car strangely doesn’t float on water while a Microsoft branded boat does.
John Welsh does a good job ripping this FUD piece apart.
